Who was involved in the Lab?

The Lab involved more than 40 representatives from housing, real estate, health, innovation, design, and the non-profit sectors in Ontario and at the national level in Canada. Lab participants dedicated their time in a range of capacities as either a Lab Team member, a Lab Advisor, a Seniors’ Design Team member, or as a Subject Matter Expert.

Christine Pacini SHS Consulting

Christine Pacini, SHS Consulting

Christine is a Partner and Co-Founder at SHS Consulting. Christine has worked as a consultant for most of her 30-year career. She has also worked for the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing as a Policy Advisor and a Program Co-ordinator, and for the City of Toronto as a Councillor's Special Advisor on Housing. Christine is involved in every aspect of SHS's work. She has authored and directed more than 200 studies, primarily focused on housing-related topics, including housing needs assessments and strategies, policy development, program design and evaluations, feasibility and business plans, and business and service models. Christine has led the development of a range of projects, including shelters, transitional, supportive, seniors and family housing, and administrative and program space. Most recently, Christine was involved in leading CMHC Solutions Labs across four provinces and territories and has recently begun a Lab with the Wellesley Institute. Christine holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy and Administration (York University) and Graduate Studies in Public Policy and Administration (Carleton University).

 
Adrienne Pacini SHS Consulting

Adrienne Pacini, SHS Consulting

Adrienne Pacini is a Principal, Strategic Design at SHS Consulting. In her role, Adrienne leads the firm’s Business Innovation practice, where the team undertakes human-centred and systems-oriented design processes to tackle complex problems in housing and social systems. She creates collaborative environments to help teams navigate change and envision a new future for their organization and for the people they serve. Over the past seven years, Adrienne has helped all levels of government, non-profit housing providers, and community agencies by introducing new services, programs, and business models to improve housing options and outcomes for all Canadians. Most recently, Adrienne was involved in leading Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation Solutions Labs to co-create a new Canada Housing Benefit, a Solutions Lab with the Wellesley Institute, and four upcoming Labs in 2020. Adrienne holds a B.A. in Urban Systems (McGill University) and an M.Des. in Strategic Foresight and Innovation (OCAD University). 

 
Lanxi Dong SHS Consulting

Lanxi Dong, SHS Consulting

Lanxi Dong is a Design Researcher at SHS Consulting. As a design researcher at SHS Consulting, Lanxi’s role involves facilitating collaboration with stakeholders and connecting insights into strategic design opportunities for housing. She became interested in affordable housing after completing her undergraduate thesis on a co-design approach to creating artist live/work housing. Lanxi’s design work focuses on human-centred research, co-design methods, systems thinking, and visual communication. She enjoys problem-solving with stakeholders to provide better housing experiences that serve people, businesses, and communities. Lanxi holds a Bachelor of Design in Industrial Design (OCAD University).

 
Joanna Cudmore Toronto Council on Aging

Sue Lantz, Collaborative Aging

Sue Lantz, BA, MPA, is the Managing Director of Collaborative Aging, an independent consulting firm. Sue is a healthcare policy expert in seniors' care and an advocate for more practical, resourceful, and “grassroots” housing and community solutions for healthy and socially connected aging-in-place and caregiving. Sue regularly speaks on proactive aging in place, organizes policy research and consultations, and delivers workshops about aging and caregiving. Sue recently released a guidebook for older adults called, "Options Open: The Guide for Mapping Your Best Aging Journey" that includes guidance on making informed and proactive housing choices. She offers planning workshops with groups of older adults on the basis of the five -strategy framework in the guide. Sue also contributes to national, provincial, and local efforts to plan vibrant and inclusive communities for people of all ages. She is an active member of the City of Toronto Seniors Strategy Accountability Table, founding member of Ryerson University’s National Institute on Ageing, and Board Member for 880 Cities, a global organization supporting creating healthier and more vibrant cities for all ages.

 

Dr. Samantha Biglieri, Toronto Council on Aging

Dr. Samantha Biglieri is an Assistant Professor in the School of Urban and Regional Planning at Ryerson University. She is also the Past President of the Toronto Council of Aging and has a background as a land-use planning consultant. Samantha’s research focuses on how the places we live in affect our health and wellbeing, in an effort to build more inclusive and accessible communities. Her work on age- and dementia-inclusive planning has been featured in academic and industry publications, international conferences, the Canadian Library of Parliament, books, podcasts, and on CBC Radio.

 

Barbara Myers, SvN Architects + Planners

Barbara Myers, MCP, RPP is a Planner with SvN who works with non-profit groups across many sectors. She assists seniors’ organizations who are considering space, function and format in their homes, workplaces and buildings. She prepares functional programs, feasibility studies, operational and management plans. SvN has worked with seniors’ organizations for over 35 years and understands the issues, opportunities and challenges seniors face in understanding and choosing housing options.

 

Joanna Cudmore, Toronto Council on Aging

Joanna has a passion for age friendly communities, engaging with the public and accurate representation and language surrounding aging and older adults. She has also worked in both Long Term Care and Retirement Residences in the Recreation Department. She has been involved with the Toronto Council on Aging since 2017 both as a Project Manager for a variety of projects including Age Friendly Ambassadors, but also as a member of the educational and communications committees. She holds a Diploma in Gerontology, B.A. in Film Studies, and Diploma in Arts Administration and Cultural Management.

Lab Team

 

The Lab Team included the organizations and individuals undertaking the Lab's day-to-day facilitation, research, and communication work. The Team consisted of staff and representatives from SHS Consulting, Toronto Council on Aging, Collaborative Aging, and SvN Architects + Planners.

Lab Advisors

 

The Lab Advisors consisted of individuals from real estate, housing, health, innovation, and seniors’-focused sectors. This group provided advice on the overall project approach, offered subject-matter expertise, and gave feedback on the Lab results.

Seniors’ Design Team

 

The Seniors’ Design Team comprised individuals with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and interests in creating solutions to address housing challenges for seniors in Ontario and beyond. This group participated in co-design workshops and engagements to provide their lived expertise and build the components of the models emerging from this Lab.
